The Bailey monofilament 10 grams is an essential diagnostic tool for testing the protective sensation of the skin, especially in patients with (risk of) peripheral neuropathy, such as diabetes mellitus.
This monofilament is designed to exert a constant pressure of 10 grams. This allows for a quick and reliable determination of whether a patient still has sufficient sensation in the feet or other parts of the body. Indispensable for annual diabetes screening or when nerve damage is suspected.
Place the monofilament perpendicular to the skin, press until the filament bends, hold for 1–2 seconds, and release. Repeat at different locations (such as under the big toe and ball of the foot). Ask the patient if they feel it with each touch.
