Amphetamine
Amphetamine is a synthetic drug. It is usually in powder form (white, pink, yellow), but can also be in capsules or pills. There is levorotatory and dextrorotatory amphetamine. In the Netherlands, a mixture of left- and right-handed amphetamine is most commonly used.
Barbiturates
Barbiturates are medications that numb the central nervous system and relax the body. Previously, they were often prescribed as tranquilizers, sleeping pills or anti-epileptic drugs.
Well-known barbiturates include:
Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines (sometimes abbreviated to benzos) are medications prescribed for sleep problems and to treat anxiety and panic attacks. In the Netherlands, this group of medications often includes diazepam, alprazolam (xanax), lorazepam and oxazepam.
Cocaine
Cocaine (cocaine hydrochloride) or coke is a white crystalline powder that can be snorted. It tastes a bit bitter. Cocaine is contained in the leaves of the coca plant (Erythoxylon coca), which mainly grows in South America. The leaves contain 0.1 to 0.9% cocaine. Cocaine is prepared from the leaves of the coca plant through a chemical process. When we talk about cocaine, we are talking about snorting coke. Crack or basecoke is the processed form of cocaine.
Cannabinoids
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the active substance in cannabis. More than 500 different substances have been found in the plant. About 100 substances belong to the group of cannabinoids (1). These cannabinoids are only found in the hemp plant. THC is the main substance that provides the psychoactive effect of cannabis. More and more research is being done into the active substances in cannabis, so more and more is becoming known about how it works and what influence each substance has. Two other important cannabinoids are CBD (cannabidiol) and CBN (cannabinol). So there are many more substances in cannabis.
Ecstasy (XTC)
Ecstasy is a pill that contains the drug MDMA. Ecstasy pills come in a lot of colors and often have a logo or image. When people talk about MDMA, they often refer to the drug in crystal or powder form. In the Netherlands, XTC is the most commonly used hard drug. Users often take the colored pills at parties and festivals. But it is also used at home, in the pub or in other places.
Opiates
Opiates are substances extracted from opium. A well-known example of this is morphine. In addition to opiates, there are also a number of chemically produced substances that have a similar effect. These are also often called opiates, for example oxycodone, fentanyl, heroin, methadone.
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCA)
Because of this, TCAs work in a different way than SSRIs.When using TCA, you may also experience other side effects, such as: drowsiness, constipation, dry mouth and reduced sex drive. Examples of TCA are: Amitryptiline and Nortriptyline (Nortrilen®).
