The absorbable sterile gelatin sponge has an astringent effect. In contact with blood, the large surface area of sponge causes rapid breakdown of platelets. This releases thromboplastin, so that normal coagulation (blood clotting) occurs.
The sponge is a-toxic and does not give any chance of allergic reactions. It adheres to the wound surface and absorbs about 40 times its own weight in blood. It can be used dry or soaked in physiological saline or antibiotics. It has a neutral pH and can be easily cut into any shape. When Spongostan is applied to the body, it is completely absorbed over the course of about 4 weeks, without any scar tissue forming.
