The \r\n  pessary fitting set is a valuable aid in selecting \r\n  the correct pessary. A vaginal lubricant may\u003cbr\u003e\r\n  be required for the patients comfort before the \r\n  insertion of the pessary.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n  \u003cbr\u003e\r\n  1. Perform a normal pelvic examination prior \r\n  to the fitting and introduction of a pessary. A \r\n  pelvic exam helps determine the appropriate \r\n  size. The pessary will easily fold across the\u003cbr\u003e\r\n  largest drainage holes to simplify insertion \r\n  and removal. The pessary should be large \r\n  enough for its indication, yet not cause any \r\n  undue pressure or discomfort. \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e 2. Compress the pessary and gently insert \r\n  the pessary through the introitus. Once the  pessary has passed through the introitus, \r\n  release the compressed pessary so that it\u003cbr\u003e\r\n  expands to its normal shape. This will insure \r\n  the patients comfort and reduce the risk of\r\n  pressure necrosis.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n  \u003cbr\u003e\r\n  3. Gently move the pessary to the cervix to \r\n  support the cystocele or rectocele and the \r\n  uterus. When in the correct position, the \r\n  healthcare professional should be able to\u003cbr\u003e\r\n  insert an examining finger between the outer \r\n  edge of the pessary and the vaginal wall. This \r\n  spacing will insure the patients comfort and \r\n  reduce the risk of pressure necrosis.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n  \u003cbr\u003e\r\n  4. Once in place, the pessary should not \r\n  dislodge when standing, sitting, squatting or  bearing down. It should not be uncomfortable \r\n  for the patient during any of these routine\u003cbr\u003e\r\n  activities.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n  \u003cbr\u003e\r\n  5. When fitting a pessary, be sure to instruct \r\n  the patient on its cleaning, insertion and \r\n  removal. The patient should perform these \r\n  tasks before the first follow-up visit.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n  \u003cbr\u003e\r\n  6. To remove the pessary, carefully move the \r\n  pessary forward towards the introitus.
